The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from Monday morning through Thursday evening for dangerously hot and humid conditions with heat index values up to and around 105 possible. Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
Be prepared to drink plenty of Fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Early Refuse, Recycling & Yard Waste Pickup
In light of the upcoming extreme heat forecast for Thursday, July 2, 2026, Groot will begin the weekly refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection one (1) hour earlier (6:00 a.m.).
This adjustment will help Groot complete the pickup before the peak heat of the day, ensuring the safety of their drivers and the prompt collection of waste.
Refuse and recycling carts, as well as yard waste bags/bundles, should be placed at the curb no later than 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2.
Extreme Heat Safety Reminder:
Residents should take extra precautions during periods of excessive summer heat.
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated; avoid alcohol and sugary beverages.
- Limit time outdoors whenever possible and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces.
- If you must work outside, take frequent breaks in a cool air-conditioned location.
- Keep pets indoors and ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time.
Residents are also encouraged to check on family members, neighbors, older adults, and other vulnerable individuals during extreme heat events.
Know the signs of Heatstroke:
If you must spend extended time outdoors, be alert for symptoms of heatstroke, a serious condition that occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature. Warning signs include:
- Dizziness or nausea.
- Severe headache and a rapid, strong pulse.
- Red, hot, and dry skin.
- Body temperature of 103°F or higher.
